Students will traverse art history by looking at the collages of Hanah Hoch, the portraiture of Pablo Picasso & Frida Kahlo, and contemporary artists Wangechi Mutu, Elizabeth Peyton and Marlene Dumas. Students will start drawing, using a photograph, either found or personal, as a means of conceptual investigation. Students will bring 2 - 3 photos of their choice, making a variety of works over the term. Individual portraits, family portraits (including pets) are ideal, or do a mixed media work of an icon - you as the artist can choose. Photographs that include objects or are situated inside a room or in nature are ideal as they add layers of complexity, enhancing the use of multiple mediums.
