Whakairo Ora – Becroft Gallery Exhibition

Alongside this year’s Sculpture Live / Whakairo Ora Symposium, the Becroft Gallery will host a focused exhibition of smaller works by the participating artists. This indoor exhibition offers a close look at the ideas, materials, and processes that inform their large-scale carvings taking shape outside on the grounds.

Responding to the symposium theme —

“He mokopuna taku iti, he tipuna taku rahi”

“I am a descendant, so I stay humble. I am also an ancestor, so what I do is important.” —

each artist presents work that acknowledges whakapapa while looking toward new futures. These pieces reflect individual approaches to wood, recycled materials, form, movement, and storytelling.

This exhibition runs throughout the symposium period and leads into the Celebration & Awards event on Sunday 7 December at 4pm, where artists will be recognised with prize categories supported by the Becroft Foundation and partners.
