Grae Burton Scholarship
About Grae Burton
Grae Burton has had a career in the arts for over 30 years, receiving his first award at the age of 16 at the Nelson Contemporary Art Awards for his oil work “Rock of the Bay”, presented at the Suter Gallery. He later went on to have his first residency at the Suter Gallery which incorporated Mask performance, sketching and interactive multimedia presentations. His career in visual arts parallelled his career in performing and screen arts, working as an experimental film and theatre actor, producer, director, designer and writer. In the 2010’s his visual art shifted into highly stylised photography and then experimental art film. He has been a finalist and salon de refusee exhibitor in the Wallace Art Awards ad at one time was one of the most collected artists in that collection. He has one several awards for stage, screen, writing and visual art, most recently the Gordon Harris award for the Mairangi Arts Members show in 2025 and the ACTT award for best male performer in a lead role for his portayal of Antony in Antony and Cleopatra. Since 2017 he has been the Kaiwhakahaere Kaupapa Toi at Te Whare Roto of Toi – Lake House Arts. This has enabled him to collect over 100 artworks from exhibitors to add to his existing private collection. He has kindly donated 80+ of those works back to Lake Hosue to form the basis of The Grae Burton Scholarship Programme.
