Nestled among the pōhutukawa and overlooking Rangitoto Island, Lake House began its life as a Victorian and Edwardian seaside boarding house — a place of rest, retreat, and gathering.

For nearly a century, its rooms echoed with the footsteps of guests and residents, artists and families, and, when need arose, those seeking care and refuge. As one of the few remaining buildings of its kind in Aotearoa, it stands as a rare architectural survivor of early settler life and coastal leisure.

This book traces the layered story of well over 100 years — from its origins on Takapuna Beach to its remarkable second lease on life, when it was saved from removal and, through the hands and hearts of a dedicated community, relocated, restored, and revived as a home for the arts. Through photographs, memories, and conversations, it honours a much-loved place that continues to offer shelter, creativity, and connection to all who pass through its doors.
