Stephen Rainbird

Stephen Rainbird was born in the Waitākere Ranges, a mountain range of beautiful native bush located on the west coast of Auckland City, later following the family to Great Barrier Island
being an equally majestic geographical part of New Zealand. He is now based in sunny Nelson/South Island close to a trio of magnificent national parks which have stunning scenery
from mountain tops to the sea.

His inspiration comes from this, the natural world, where he thoroughly enjoys tramping which is also the basis for attaining most of the landscape images in his collection. The other inspiration was from his father who was a professional photographer and painter.

The favourite medium of Rainbird Photography (as the business is known), is the photograph. This usually translates into a Fine Art Print known as a Giclée Fine Art Print. Stephen is mainly
self-taught using the internet and websites from other professional photographers, and naturally from an accumulation of many years ‘clicking’ away.

Stephen is very grateful for the opportunity to illustrate his passion for photography in this space dedicated to showing works of art, transitioning from time spent at a local market. In due course he will also include a dedicated website and has started displaying pictures on Instagram

Growing up I was intrigued with photographs, imagining a story it was telling me and what theindividual features within the picture were describing. At first it was all in black and white or if
you discovered some really old photos then it might have been in sepia tone.

Dad took all of the family photographs, developed them and enlarged some too. I was very interested although a little too young to really understand.

My first camera (that dad gave me) was a 35mm film and now I use a state of the art digital mirrorless equivalent. I shoot predominately landscapes, closely followed by bird and animal
photography, then any other genre a close third.

I like vibrancy and colour in my photos if I’m lucky enough for nature to bestow it. Think of my photos as a portal, “walk into the frame and begin the journey”.
