Artist Statement:
This piece is from a piece of Kauri dug out of the ground here where I live in rural Auckland. It had extensive decay but the surviving wood was very hard.
Trimmed to shape and hollowed out, it embodies dark and light; rough and smooth; hard and soft; while alluding to a germinating seed or a waka huia.
It is also able to be lit from the inside.
