Northland Basalt and Takaka marble
Artist Statement:

"There is beauty in all things. Whether it is a rugged bit of basalt scarred by volcanic gases blowing pathways throughout in its formation. Whether it is the cold hard days of winter and new growth only there in the potential of seeds and dormant shoots.

Or whether it is a pool of water ruffled by the breeze but bright, clear and  life giving.

These are the elements explored in this piece called simply Tipua. She is the embodiment of new growth and life bursting from the ground, her face angled to the sun. She comes from the foundations of the earth. Rock rising up into earth and earth rising up into strong young tendrils finding support where they can in the quest for growth and the sun’s power.

This particular rock revealed its hidden form to me right from the beginning of this sculptural journey. It was a tall rock but not very deep through so always intended to be half the female form. But her energy and yearning for growth are full powered. The back side is rippled in the effect of water in a summer breeze. The flattish nature of the piece and its base rock means the work can nestle into a garden close to a wall or hedge. A  sheltered spot such as would suit the growing kumara, symbolised with heart shaped leaves rising up with Tipua."
