Artist Statement:
My kinetic stainless-steel sculpture playfully presents light and dark rotating, swirling, floating in the air.
As a Tipua form, the design studies the seeds of fruit. Each of the many hundreds of drawings I made are all observations, each different from the next, but retaining the sacred form of a seed evolving, that eventually awakens the sweet spot of taste.
My hope, as in the days of old Aotearoa, is to present in modern materials, the whakapapa and the karaka of the growth of the seed's transformation.
I dedicate this work to my beautiful niece Hinereia, who passed away during this symposium, forever in my heart.
The symposium with different media was a good move giving artists opportunities to explore new ideas and mix elements. I still miss the onsite energy, comradery, and public interaction at the Takapuna site. A theme symposium took it to a different level that I thoroughly enjoyed.
