Artist Statement:
"The term ‘wairua’ is typically used by Māori in reference to the spiritual dimension of existence. Etymologically, wairua is comprised of two separate words - wai meaning water and rua meaning two – implying the existence of two entities, which paradoxically may be oppositional while at the same time complementary, thus hinting at the notion of a balanced wholeness. (Valentine, H., Tassell-Mataamua, N., & Flett, R. (2017). Whakairia ki runga: The many dimensions of wairua. New Zealand Journal of Psychology (Online), 46(3), 64-71.)

Participating in the Wood Sculpture Symposium 2021 has been a fine balancing act between life commitments and personal growth. The vines in this work represent the journey I’ve been on for the past couple of years and the holistic self-growth through whakairo. Completing this work has been challenging on many levels (especially physically), but it's been extremely nurturing mentally and spiritually. "
